Welcome to the Bioenergy Technology Selection Matrix—a service of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Biomass State and Regional Partnership (The Partnership). This website is designed to provide users a quick method to conduct a preliminary selection of technologies for specific bioenergy applications and to provide clarity and direction to potential bioenergy users.
Biomass-to-energy is a complex matrix of choices. Therefore a “simplified” method of technology selection is not easy to attain and the information provided herein should be considered illustrative of the options available and not comprehensive of all biomass feedstocks or conversion pathways. The information on this website is generic in nature and is focused on commercially available technologies; however, part of this website also provides information on emerging technologies. There may be some variations in the actual technology offered by different vendors, as well as within the technology pathways. Furthermore, there is some disagreement among bioenergy experts about the commercial availability and applicability of different technologies. Users of this website should keep this in mind and consult professionals before making decisions.
To use this website, simply click on the type of biomass (the feedstock) and then click on the energy product desired (process heat, biofuels, space heating and cooling, and electricity). The suggested pathway(s) to convert the biomass selected to the energy form desired will appear on the bottom of the screen.
The applicability of different pathways will partially depend on the types, quantities, and qualities of biomass feedstocks available. Therefore, an accurate measurement of the quantities of biomass feedstocks should be in hand before trying to find suitable conversion pathways. For a listing of the various biomass feedstocks in the selection matrix, click on the heading labeled "Potential Biomass Feedstocks." For a more detailed listing of the energy products listed in the matrix, click on the heading labeled "Potential Energy Products." General descriptions of the various technology pathways can be found by clicking on the heading "Technology Descriptions." Your state bioenergy coordinator has a listing of various technology vendors. Click on the heading "State Bioenergy Coordinators" to see a list of the state bioenergy coordinators, including listings for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
